What Causes An Air Conditioner to Leak Water?
An air conditioning system's job is twofold. It must both cool the indoor air as well as remove humidity. The removal of humidity is what results in the condensation of water. This water must go somewhere, which is why most air conditioning systems are outfitted with a condensate drain line to dispense the water. There are many processes and problems that could result in leaking water from a central air conditioning system.
Typical AC Functions That Cause Leaking Water
Central air conditioning systems have a built-in dehumidifier. The normal functioning of the dehumidifier condenses water out of the indoor air. This water typically drains out through the condensate line. If the indoor air is quite humid or the condensate line has an obstruction, the water could leak around the indoor portion of the unit.
Air conditioners reuse water during each cycle of the system. Some of the water that is condensed out of the air is sent through the cooling coils and into the bottom of the system where it is used to cool the heating coils. Any excess water drips off the coils. This water will be around the outdoor portion of the unit.
An air conditioner can also leak water if its base was installed unevenly. Most air conditioner compressor units are placed upon a concrete slab outdoors. Uneven settling of the slab could result in excessive water leaking.
When Leaking Water from an Air Conditioner Is a Problem
In some cases, water leaking from the air conditioner represents a mechanical problem. Only an AC repair technician can pinpoint the exact cause of why an air conditioner is leaking water. Some of the most frequent problems that result in abnormal water leaks include:
When a small amount of water is coming off the outdoor system, nothing special needs to be done. However, if it is a large amount of water or water around the indoor evaporator unit, the system might need air conditioner maintenance or a repair.
