Summer is officially here and we have many long, hot days are ahead. It is important, though, to recover and stay cool both indoors and outdoors. Here are some tips to stay refreshed and relaxed for little or no money:
1- Stay hydrated: Make sure you drink enough water each day to quench your thirst and keep your body cool. Juices and some electrolyte-based drinks (like Gatorade) often help as well. Drinks like sodas may be refreshing, but they may also dehydrate us if we drink too much. Whatever you choose to drink, make sure to drink the right balance of water and/or other beverages to keep your body happy and healthy
2- Evaluate what you are wearing: Consider wearing lighter colors on very hot days, especially if you will be outdoors for an extended period of time. Darker colors — like navy blue, brown, and black — are definitely great wardrobe staples throughout the year; however, these colors also tend to absorb the rays from the sun. Lighter colors— like white, beige, cream, and pastel colors — actually reflect the sun’s rays away from your body, keeping you cooler overall.
3- Use your ceiling fans: Instead of relying entirely on your air conditioner, save a little energy and money and turn on your ceiling fan once in a while. The cool air is refreshing and will take some of the burden away from your air conditioner. A mini fan is also a great option for your desk at work.
4- Visit Cool Places: Enjoy the free air conditioning at many public areas. Buildings, like museums, community centers, libraries, and movie theaters are often kept at very cool temperatures in the summer and are also a great place to hang out alone or with friends and family.
Take steps to make sure you maximize the opportunities to stay cool. Stay refreshed, hydrated, and safe over the coming months and have a great summer!
